Doctor Artur Planck (Fiennes) and his family are Polish Jews, on the run from the Nazis in 1941.
They find a hiding place at the farm of Emilia (Harrison), a woman whose husband left to fight and hasn't returned.
When Artur and Emilia's friendship develops into an affair, Artur is put in a difficult position.
His behaviour could destroy his family but if he puts a stop to his relationship with Emilia, he risks losing the safety of the farm and falling into the hands of the Nazis.
