Widower Ray Keene (John Cusack) is a father who wants to bond with his son on a trip to the wilderness.
At the same time Frank Cordell (Morgan Freeman), a freelance assassin being taken under guard by the FBI, crashes into a river after a rescue attempt by his men.
Rescued by Keene, Cordell tries to plead for his freedom, but Ray feels duty calling him to return Cordell to justice.
Unknown to Ray, Cordell's men are on his trail and closing in.
