Directed by the legendary British film director Michael Powell and produiced by Alexander Korda 'The Lion has Wings' was sponsored by the Ministry of Information and released only two months after the outbreak of World War II. The film was one of the first propaganda films of the conflict. Opening with scenes of everyday life in Britain in 1937 'The Lion has Wings' combines documentary footage with scripted scenes starring in cineam greats Ralph Richardson and Merle Oberon. Europe in the late 1030s sees the growing influence of theGerman nation under the control of Adolf Hitler. Contrasted with life under Nazi rule is the rural peace of England and the dignity of its inhabitants. War is finally declared in 1939 but Great Britain is ready and knows that it can depend on the resilience of its people and the prefessionalism of its armed forces that will soon be called into battle.
