Once again, Dirk Boagrde shows himself to be one of the finest actors of his generation with his portrayal of the hopeless and alienated Chris Lloyd. Lloyd is guilty of a crime of passion, murdering the lover of his unfaithful wife. Robbie (Jon Whiteley), a young boy escaping the evil clutches of his violent stepfather, witness the murder. Together they try and escape the long arm of the law and as their journey around the country unfolds, a touching and sensitive bond develops between the two fugitives.Their journey takes them to Scotland where Chris finally accepts that he can no longer make his escape with the boy. As Robbie's health deteriorates thefilm reaches its climax and Chris must decide what is best for both of them. Director Charles Crichton superbly captures working class life in post war Britain with this gritty but sensitive British drama.
