A former cabaret player who later became a household name, gap-toothed cad and 'absolute shower' Terry-Thomas firmly established himself as one of Britain's best-loved comedians. It was the Boulting Brothers who encouraged Terry-Thomas to develop a screen persona as the blustering Major Hitchcock in one of their biggest box office successes of the 50s, Private's Progress (1956). As Major Hitchcock, Terry-Thomas offers a brilliant parody of the "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" school of military service. One of Terry-Thomas' defining roles and a film that has become a British comic institution, the Major Hitchcock character also gave Terry-Thomas the immortal and oft-quoted line, "You're all absolute showers." Thomas is on scene-stealing form as career criminal Alfred Green in Brothers In Law (1957), the second in the Boultings' series of good natured, satirical swipes at British institutions. In The Naked Truth (1957), Too Many Crooks (1959), the seminal School For Scoundrels (1959), and Make Mine MInk (1960), Thomas' famous smile, military moustache, dandified attire and rich, fruity voice with its "Oh, good show" banter, made him the definitive rogue, constantly scheming to avoid his creditors or ensnare some hapless heiress.
